Subconscious shapes
Form follows function?
Can you say you went to art school if you didn’t ask this question? The starting point for this project was to pick apart and mess around with Adolf Loos and his theories, modernism as a philosophy, and the principle that form should follow function; also known as the saying “Form Follows Function”. The goal was to create a discussion around the modernistic thinking that characterizes the design world.
“Does this only show how strictly raised i am by the modern design language?”
I turned the "Form Follows Function" concept upside down to find out where my ideas come from; if it mainly is based on internal or external impulses. To challenge my own work process, I chose to spend two weeks in the dark, without the critique of the eye or other limiting elements, to make shapes in clay. Then I tried to give some selected shapes a function.
The end product ironically became a chair that could easily fit into a Scandinavian design fair - despite the fact that I had full freedom in this project, and no rules. The question I am left with is therefore whether I have found some kind of inner shape library, or whether this shows how strictly raised I am in the modern design language; completely unconscious.
