Material study
- exploring the forgotten design history through textile
Discovering textile
I have 5 years of education as a furniture designer and interior architect, and have throughout all these years had male teachers who largely refer to male designers in teaching. I have asked the question to myself many times, why haven’t I learn about the women in design and why have we not learned more about softer materials in a furniture design education. It’s seems to me that some still value harder material as wood and metal higher that textiles, and in the course of history this I nothing new. Numerous textile-materials has been seen as less worth because of its connotations to women and the feminine, who also have been viewed as «less than».
I have experienced that we are only taught one side of the story and it has made me aware that women are written out of the story. From this began a search for stories about women's contribution and role in design history, and a whole new world opened up. By diving into the world of textiles, I discovered the beginning of women's significant place in design history as well as stories about female power. The discoveries of the forgotten women who paved the way without much recognition gave me new inspiration, creative freedom and self-confidence.
